Wakeboarding is on the agenda at Sun & Sand Sports this week, and Irish pro wakeboarder, David O’Caoimh has been showing us all a thing or two out on the water. The twenty three year old Dubliner is absolutely killing it in the wakeboard scene, and we were lucky enough to catch up with him on his recent trip to Dubai, getting our own coaching session in the SSS How To: Wakeboard instructional video with Sea Riders UAE.
Propelling his career from prodigy to professional status, this young athlete’s rise to prominence is nothing short of inspirational, and David is truly at the top of his game, travelling the world, pursuing his wakeboarding passion around the globe. But this doesn’t come without sacrifice, or let’s say, decisiveness, when David had to choose between university and wakeboarding at a professional level, turning down the degree he had started, choosing instead, his love for the sport – and it’s safe to say that he hasn’t looked back since. “Every day I actually want to do this, so I don’t have anything that motivates me, it’s just a constant thing,” says David as we talk about personal motivation and drive to achieving his goals.
We talked about the Dubai wakeboard scene, and the variety of people pursuing the sport – from the casual weekenders to the die-hard fans. David talked us through his top training tips – focusing on strength and conditioning, as well as balance and flexibility. This sport is just as much about the in situ training on the water, as it is about the fitness aspect when the boots are off. In fact, Sea Riders have started their own training boot camp which focuses on the key muscle groups and movements required for wakeboarding – and you’d be surprised just how many muscles are recruited for activity when you hit the water. It’s all about posture, core stability and engagement – you’ve got to know which muscles to engage in order to make particular movements happen, and at speed, which is what makes it tricky. So knowing how to go about your training before you even hit the water, means that you’ll learn the ropes even quicker and the only way from there is up.
So you’re equipped with the know-how, but what about the gear? We’ve selected a range of apparel from sssports.com to get you kitted out in all the latest swimwear for your next wakeboard session, and it’s all available at the click of a button from the Sun & Sand Sports online store.
