Before you rush into signing up for gym memberships, here’s all you need to know about starting a routine and how to stick to it.
Get a check-up. Visit your healthcare provider to detect problems or conditions that could put you at risk for injury while exercising. Understanding your body can help identify the best exercises for you and optimise your workouts.
Plan and set realistic goals. Planning workouts keeps you accountable, prevents you from getting overwhelmed and sets you up for consistent progress. Start with achievable goals like 30-minute workout twice a week.
Begin with easy workouts. A brisk walk or bodyweight exercises are perfect first steps. Consistency is key and small, but regular moves build lasting healthy habits.
Discover activities you enjoy. Whether it’s a solo exercise bike session, sweating it out at a group fitness class or stress-relieving yoga time. When you have fun doing something, you’ll stick with it.
Listen to your body. If you’re feeling energised, push a little harder. If you’re tired, take a rest. Remember, rest is just as important in training.
For those who are still easing their body to more regular training or want to squeeze a few minutes of exercise in between their busy day at home or in the office, you can try these quick workouts that don’t need equipment.
Stretch with the sunrise. Stand tall, reach your arms overhead, then bend forward, gently touching your fingertips to the floor. Repeat 5 times. Then, roll your shoulders back and forward, then circle your hips in both directions. Finish with a few deep breaths to energise your body and mind.
Stair climber. Take one step at a time, focusing on keeping your core engaged and back straight. Start with 2 sets of 10-15 reps, then gradually increase as you get stronger.
Walk it off. Step outside or around the office and walk. Aim for 30 minutes, picking up the pace slightly every 5 minutes for a mini-burst of cardio.
Chair yoga. Sit tall, then roll your shoulders, reach your arms overhead, and bend forward for a gentle hamstring stretch. Do 10 reps of each exercise, and feel free to hold longer if you feel good.
High knees. Get your heart pumping with this cardio blast. Stand tall, core engaged and bring each knee up towards your chest as fast as you can for 30 seconds. Rest for 30 seconds, then repeat 3 times.
