To say that the 2016-2017 du Football Champions League has been nothing short of exhilarating would be an understatement. The path that began 5 months ago has witnessed some extremely well-fought matches by the best of the best teams in this region, and finally led us to the du football arena on 18th March 2017 at the Dubai Mall. Turning the ice rink into a turf football field, the forces gathered for a day of celebrating the beautiful game and battling it out for the ultimate glory – the du Football Championship.
Over the past few months teams from across UAE’s schools and streets faced each other in the second season of the du FC League through tightly contested matches. Each game intensified the league with surprise wins and unexpected upsets. The du FC Finals were no different with the previous year’s Boys Under 16 winners, International School of Choueifat Dubai facing off against International Academic School to claim the 3rd place with a 2-1 score. The finals saw Al Mawakeb School Garhoud beat Al Maarifa International Private School 5-4 to claim the Boy’s Under 16 Championship. Among the street teams, Al7osani FC dominated their match against Ultimate XI with a searing score of 5-0 to bring home the Streets Cup, with Classic Team and Kamikaze clinching the 3rd and 4th places respectively.
Bringing their own brand of fury to the field, the challengers for the Girl’s Cup stepped up to the game with deadly skill and precision. The finalists of the Girls Challenge fought tooth and nail, as audiences watched Go Pro Sports Dubai convert every opportunity they could to defeat Adastra Dubai 6-2 and claim the top spot, with Abu Dhabi Country Club trumping Fusion FC Dubai 2-0.
The award ceremony brought out the stars with the former Real Madrid captain and du FC Championship Director Michel Salgado, LaLiga General Director MENA Fernando Sanz and FC Barcelona legend Carlos Puyol at hand to award the winners. This was promptly followed by a du LaLiga High Performance Centre training session with the football stars and their teams of the league’s elite players from the league. Young footballers trained using special football techniques like Rondo drills and possession training. This was soon followed by the highlight of the day, a du FC Clasico exhibition football match where Carlos Puyol’s team faced off a team led by Michel Salgado and Fernando Sanz. In what can only be described as sensational, the audience was treated to a dazzling display of skill and power, with Puyol’s team emerging victorious scoring 2-0.
