Winter Transfer Deadline Day:
Big money, and big moves! Literally the words that define what the Deadline day is all about. The January transfer window saw some very unlikely and surprising transfers on the last day. From Joao Cancelo to Enzo Fernandez to Mykhailo Mudryk, We saw some top talent make moves abroad to the big leagues. Let’s breakdown some of the big transfers:
1. Enzo Fernandez – Benfica to Chelsea, £106.8m
A name that had been in-demand since winning the World Cup with Argentina in Qatar, Enzo Fernandez is a player that was sure to secure a move to a big club, especially after he won the Young Player of the Tournament award at the World Cup. After detailed negotiations, Chelsea managed to sign him on the last day.
2. Joao Cancelo – Manchester City to Bayern Munich, loan
Arguably one of the most surprising transfers of the window, this one came out of the blue, literally. The versatile Portugese right back who was Manchester City’s & Pep Guardiola’s most trusted player on the pitch, found himself on the bench throughout the course of the season, with the manager opting for English youngster instead Rico Lewis. His lack of game time, and an alleged fallout with Guardiola, resulted in a move away to the Bavarians.
3. Mykhailo Mudryk – Shaktar Donetsk to Chelsea, £88.5m
A hugely exciting talent, Mudryk was a name that many clubs wanted to have in their squad. The 22-year old Ukranian winger has been putting in impressive performances for Shaktar Donetsk, and thus making a name for himself since. While he indicated his desire to move for Arsenal, only Chelsea could manage the heavy price tag. His ability to attack the backline & go in wide areas makes him a threat on the left side as per Graham Potter
4. Jorginho – Chelsea to Arsenal, £12m
With Mikel Arteta looking to bolster his midfield & furthermore, their title chances, Jorginho will look to add experience and value to this Arsenal squad. The table toppers are currently short of midfielders with Mohammed Elneny injured whereas Albert Sambi Lokonga has joined Crystal Palace on loan. Arsenal also missed out on Moises Caicedo due to Brighton rejecting their bids.
5. Keylor Navas – Paris Saint Germain to Nottingham Forest, loan
We can all agree that like Joao Cancelo, we did not see this one coming. The 3-time Champions League winner was struggling for game time with Paris Saint Germain, with Gigi Donarumma taking his place. Navas’ experience will surely be a welcome addition between the sticks for Forest, especially with Man Utd loanee Dean Henderson out injured.
6. Marcel Sabitzer – Bayern Munich to Manchester United, Loan
The Austrian midfielder has been struggling for regular game time under Julian Nagelsmann, so this will serve as a welcome move to the Red Devils. With the Red Devils losing Christian Eriksen & Donny Van de Beek to injuries, Erik Ten Haag needed to boost his midfield and Sabitzer is the player that could help in that department.
Some other notable Deadline Day transfers and mentions include:
1) Weston McKennie – Juventus to Leeds United- Loan
2) Hector Bellerin – Barcelona to Sporting Lisbon- £1m
3) Matt Doherty – Tottenham Hotspur to Atletico Madrid- Free
4) Felipe – Atletico Madrid to Nottingham Forest- £2m
5) Thorgan Hazard – Borussia Dortmund to PSV Eindhoven- Loan
