Tennis fever is at an all-time high as Wimbledon 2017 reaches the finals round on June 16. After two exhilarating weeks of victories and upsets, all eyes are on the Centre Court for the men’s singles showdown between tennis greats Swiss Roger Federer and Croatian Marin Cilic to find out who will be raising the men’s cup.

Wimbledon 2017

The Championships, Wimbledon is steeped in history and this year marks its 140th anniversary. So why is it an important event in the sports calendar and why are all the players wearing white? Wimbledon is part of the four major Grand Slam tennis tournaments and the only one still played on trimmed grass. It was first held in 1877 and staged by the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Through the years, the garden party pastime has evolved to a professional sporting spectacle drawing thousands to the world-class facility in London. But it has never forgotten tradition, like snacking on strawberries and cream – because like the sport, the fruit also signifies the beginning of summer. The attendance of important guests in the Royal Box. And probably the best known is the strict all-white dress code for players.

Other tournaments waived wearing of white on the court, but not at Wimbledon 2017. The clothing and equipment guideline states competitors must be dressed in suitable tennis attire that is “entirely white” and not off-white or cream. Colour is only acceptable around the neckline trim and sleeve cuff, “but must be no wider than one centimetre.” There have been violations of the dress code by wearing bright undergarments or shoes, but rule is a rule. It must be annoying for some athletes, but pristine white on emerald green grass is still a wonderful sight to see.

Embrace the Wimbledon tradition with these cool whites from the Sun & Sand Sports tennis collection.
