After a month of high octane action and drama, the World Cup 2018 has come to a close with France as the crowning champions. It’s truly been a remarkable journey for the winning team, but let’s not forget every other team that took part in this tournament. Just playing in the World Cup is a dream come true for all the players around the world, and with teams such as Croatia and Belgium outperforming even the best of the best, this World Cup was only a beginning for beautiful things to come in the near future. Let’s take a quick look at final bits of the World Cup action and congratulate the winners on their outstanding achievements.
France beat Croatia in what is said to be the best World Cup final in years. After falling behind 1-0, Croatia bounced back with a beautiful team goal to level the playing field. But a very divisive penalty decision in favour of France allowed Antoine Griezmann to take France up to 2 before Half Time. After Half Time, Mbappe terrorized the defence which led to a goal from Paul Pogba and Mbappe himself, taking the score to 4-1. An error from the French goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris allowed Croatia to get 1 more to end the game 4-2. Croatia fought with passion until the last minute, but this game was clearly going in favour of France as they had been the better team with better talent overall. Congratulations to the winning team!
Croatia was crowned second in the World Cup and after Belgium beat England 2-0 in the third place play offs, they were crowned third. Sadly, it didn’t come home for England.
Luka Modric was named the player of the tournament as he took home the adidas Golden Ball Award with Eden Hazard falling second and Antoine Griezmann coming in third.
Kylian Mbappe, deservedly, took home the FIFA Young Player Award for his outstanding performance throughout the tournament.
Harry Kane might’ve not been the best striker in the tournament but having the most number of goals in the tourney allowed him to win the adidas Golden Boot Award with Antoine Griezmann coming in second and Romelu Lukaku coming in third.
Thibaut Courtois was voted the best goalkeeper and after seeing the unbelievable saves he’s made with conceding only 6 goals in a total of 7 matches, he deservedly takes home the adidas Golden Glove Award.
Congratulations to all the winners and we wait with bated breath for the next World Cup in 2022! We’re readying ourselves already. Are you?
