Born To Run With The ASICS GEL-Kayano 24

The ASICS brand was born out of a simple idea that turned into a mission towards sports greatness. From creating the first basketball shoes with suction cups in 1949, to a now formidable reputation in the running industry, ASICS continues to produce high-performance and memorable footwear backed by a long history, and the science to support personal athletic ambitions. Among the unceasingly popular shoe series from this Japan-based brand is the ASICS Kayano line, which was introduced in 1994. And after more than 20 years of ground-breaking innovation, comes its new iteration: the GEL-Kayano 24.

For the serious runners, the ASICS Kayano is synonymous with stability and comfort. And if the loyal fans thought it couldn’t get any better, the Kayano continues to surprise us. We take a look at the new upgrades that this road shoe has to offer.

SMOOTH AND STEADY

The GEL-Kayano 24 is now equipped with MetaClutch technology, which was first introduced in the elite Metarun shoe in 2016. The MetaClutch holds the heel better when you run thanks to its firm external counter that wraps around the ankle to provide an adaptive fit. This is combined with the supporting element of the Dynamic DUOMAX™ system on the midfoot. This feature is aimed at runners with a tendency to overpronate (inward roll of the heel) as it ‘corrects’ the gait and optimises natural foot movement.

DYNAMIC COMFORT

The upper has been redesigned with a FLUIDFIT system designed with stretch mesh inserts, and a seamless jacquard mesh outer that enhances comfort level and fitting. It is also reinforced with highly elastic strips using a hotmelt method to reduce weight. The padded collar has been rolled down to prevent friction. In the midsole, we see the FlyteFoam, which is lighter than the industry standard and composed of organic ‘super fibres’ that bounce back into original shape no matter the amount of impact. The trademarked ASICS GEL™ system found in the rear and forefoot absorbs the impact and minimises the force when lowering and pushing off.

PROTECTION AND GRIP

ASICS caters to all types of runner and all kinds of surface. The women’s model of the Kayano 24 also features a PLUS3™ system making it three millimetres higher than the men’s version to reduce strain on the Achilles tendon and prevent injury. It also has a Gender Specific Cushioning of 48° softer material for women, than the 53° for men. The Kayano 24 outsole is composed of AHAR®+ material, which combines wear resistance and durability. The outsole is mapped with flex grooves for flexibility and to spread the pressure load with the Guidance Line and Space Trusstic stabilisation unit to bring the foot into a neutral position.
