Champions League 2019/20: The Group Stage Lowdown

In a few days from now, football fans around the world will be getting their jerseys and their team spirit ready for the most prized trophy in all of Europe. Friends become enemies and enemies become friends. Here’s our lowdown for The UEFA Champions League (UCL) 2019/20.

TLDR; Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are the teams to beat for the cup.
But let’s take a quick look at how each group might fare.

Group A features two football powerhouses – Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. Les Parisiens boast the most depth in their squad in almost every position and are sure to put up a tough fight, if not win, against the five-time UCL winners.

Group B has last years’ finalists, Tottenham Hotspur, competing for pole position with the Bavarian behemoth, Bayern Munich. On paper, things seem in favour of Bayern but Tottenham have proven, as of last year, they are not to be underestimated.

Group C has Manchester City pegged as favourites. A relatively easier group, however Atalanta are no pushover. Shakhtar Donetsk and Dinamo Zagreb may just put a fight, but may lack strength to take the top-spot.

Group D is possibly the ‘Group of Death’ with the triple threat of Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen. We expect Atletico Madrid to rise to the challenge of stopping the relentless Juventus. Bayer Leverkusen pose a serious threat on their good days, so an upset might be in the books.

Group E has the reigning champions, Liverpool, alongside relatively easier teams. Napoli are the only contenders to Liverpool but will need favourable winds to stop the Red Trinity of Salah, Firmino and Mane. Will we see Mohamed Salah powering the Reds all the way through to the final?  

Group F is the group to watch out. Pole position is pretty much guaranteed for an invigorated Barcelona. The second position is up for contest between Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan in a clash of styles.

Group G features the welterweights of European football. Lyon or RB Leipzig could top this group and Lyon might just reach the semi-finals.

Group H sees Chelsea cruising to first place if they can only avoid an upset from the dark horse of the Champions League, FC Ajax. Valencia, a contender of old, pose a threat to put a dent in the otherwise clear outcome.

Some groups have it easy, some quite tough. At a quick glance, the results seem predictable but what seems to be may not always come to be. That’s the beauty of football.
